Distributed Operation
The ICAM System is designed to be used in a distributed manner. The system
lends itself to operation in a distributed environment in three significant
ways.
Management of
the
system can be distributed to the various operational areas using the system.
Each operator will be able to access applications and view and change only
the parts of the various databases under their authority as assigned by the
ICAM system manager. All operators have their own menus and access files.
The menu file assigned to an operator defines the set of applications that
the operator can access and the access files determine which fields can be
viewed and updated by the operator.
The ICAM
system is
designed to be used in a distributed data environment, sharing data with
various database servers already in use. Typically a company or institution
already has in place a set of databases with such information as cardholder
demographics, department assignments, dorm assignments, meal plans, employee
status, and other related data. The system is designed to integrate data
from these resources by importing and exporting data to and from these
servers.
The ICAM
system is
designed to operate in a distributed manner over a campus network. The
system transaction processing can operate using one or more
server
computers distributed on the network. Card readers can be connected to
network, terminal
servers distributed around campus communicating via Ethernet, TCP/IP or
LAT protocols, and terminals.
